Wayne Rooney has played only 45 minutes of pre-season football because
of hamstring and shoulder injuries, but Manchester United gave him
permission to report for duty at St George's Park.
And Rooney was out on the training pitch at 10am on Monday - half an
hour before the scheduled start of the session - as preparations began
in earnest for the first England-Scotland game in almost 14 years.
Roy Hodgson - who will hold a news conference at 1pm - has assured
David Moyes he will not take a chance with Rooney's fitness on Wednesday
night, and the United manager is expecting a rusty performance from his
player.
Speaking after United's Community Shield success on Sunday, the Scot
again insisted Rooney's absence was down to fitness and injury issues
rather than ongoing speculation over his future.
"I want him to join up," Moyes said on Sunday. "He's not ready,
you'll probably see that in the game. He'll probably play a chunk of the
game.
"He's had no football. He's had 45 minutes against Real Betis in a
friendly when he hurt his shoulder. Apart from that, since the day he
got back for pre-season, he's got no match action.
"So you probably wouldn't expect somebody in that condition to be playing for a long period."
Moyes and United are adamant Rooney is not for sale and Chelsea have
twice this summer failed with bids for the 27-year-old, who has been
training with the reserves at Carrington to avoid physical contac
