Why would Luis Suarez choose Arsenal over Liverpool?
hil Thompson says Luis Suarez might realise his Champions League ambitions at Liverpool quicker than he would at Arsenal.
The Sky Sports pundit was speaking after the Uruguayan striker publically reiterated his desire to leave Anfield on Wednesday, claiming that Liverpool had broken promises and that he "needed to be playing in the Champions League".
Thompson pointed out that Arsenal, who had a £40million bid for the player rejected last month, are not guaranteed a spot in this year's Champions League because they still need to overcome a two-legged qualifier later this month.
And the former Liverpool captain believes that if Suarez was to stay,
then they would have a real chance of beating Arsene Wenger's side to a
top-four finish next season.
"This is Arsenal bidding for him and Arsenal haven't even qualified yet for the Champions League," Thompson told Sky Sports News.
"Who knows what might happen? They haven't even got that yet and he's wanting to go to Arsenal for Champions League football.
"Certainly he's going to get the same media attention and the same difficulties as he's had at Liverpool, so is it going to be any different at Arsenal?
"And if Arsenal don't make another signing, which has been known, before the deadline happens at the start of September then where does that leave Arsenal?
"With Liverpool's signings, they could be challenging Arsenal for a top-four place next year. Why choose Arsenal ahead of Liverpool?"

Redknapp: Suarez lacks respect

Rodgers takes swipe at Arsenal over Luis Suarez pursuit
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has accused Arsenal of playing 'a game' as they pursue unsettled striker Luis Suarez.
Gunners
boss Arsene Wenger admitted he remains interested in the Uruguayan and
the club recently bid £40m plus £1 in the hope of activating a clause in
Suarez's contract. This offer was rejected by Liverpool and Rodgers has yet again reiterated his determination to keep Suarez at Anfield.
But the Reds boss admits he was taken aback by Arsenal's attempts to lure away the player and believes the Londoners have resorted to gamesmanship.
"I've got to say I've always associated Arsenal as a club with class and so there was a wee bit of a game there," he said.
"For us, it's about moving on and doing our own work. There will come a point where they understand our position.
"Obviously they have an interest and they put that interest in with two bids which were nowhere near what the player is worth. That's within their right.
"There is a market in football for players but from us the message is constant: we do not want to sell."
Suarez's repeated disciplinary problems have disrupted his Liverpool career, but Rodgers insists the owners do not intend to cash-in on their prize asset.
"I'm extremely confident that Luis will be here [next season]," he said.
"The offers have come in as you would expect for one of the world's leading strikers but as time goes by I'm gaining more confidence because I have a chance to be with him on a day-to-day basis and he gets the chance to be around his team-mates.
"We're in total control of the situation as a club and that's how it will remain.
"The owners have been brilliant. If it was another club needing the money or desperate for the money it could have been a different story.
"But [owner] John Henry and Tom [Werner, chairman] have been first class through the whole process, so there are no arguments there and it gives you the confidence they are not in any hurry to sell because they understand we are trying to build here."
Steven Gerrard says Liverpool season hinges on Luis Suarez
Gerrard believes Liverpool's season depends on
keeping hold of Luis Suarez - and says a move to Arsenal "doesn't make
sense at all".
Suarez remains heavily linked with a move away from Anfield with Arsenal having two bids rejected for the Uruguay international striker, the last one of £40million plus £1 which they believed would trigger a sale clause.
Liverpool have always maintained they merely had to inform the player of offers of that magnitude and have been steadfast in stating Suarez is not for sale.
Anfield captain Gerrard certainly does not want to see the 26-year-old leave - particularly to a club he sees as a direct rival in the race for Champions League football.
In an interview in the Independent, he said: "It's difficult every season to finish in the top four positions because of the power the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United have got at the moment.
"The likes of us, Tottenham and Arsenal are fighting to sneak into the other place that's available.
"Where we sit actually right now, it all depends on what decision Luis Suarez makes in the next few weeks. If we lose him then the challenge becomes even more difficult. It's that simple.
"If he goes to Arsenal, it obviously makes our season that little bit more difficult.
"It strengthens them an awful lot and they are our rivals for a top-four position. From the club's point of view it doesn't make sense at all, no matter how much money is put on the table."

Cavani stands up for Liverpool's Luis Suarez and blasts Brendan Rodgers
Cavani has come to the defence of Luis
Suarez by insisting his Uruguayan compatriot has shown commitment to
Liverpool, and telling Brendan Rodgers to 'look up what loyalty means'.
Suarez has made it clear that he wants to leave Anfield this summer and declared last week that it was written in his contract that he could move on if the club failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
Liverpool denied there was such an agreement and insisted the striker would not be sold, having previously turned down a bid of £40m + £1 from Arsenal.
Reds boss Rodgers has made Suarez train on his own and demanded that he apologise to his team-mates, after criticising the player's attitude and accusing him of going against the club's values.
"The Liverpool coach can talk about loyalty and disrespect but maybe he needs to look up what it means."
Edinson Cavanihad an opportunity to go to Juventus last season but instead stayed with Liverpool.
"The Liverpool coach can talk about loyalty and disrespect but maybe he needs to look up what it means," Cavani is quoted as saying in The Sun.
"Luis had the chance last year to join Juventus, who went on to win the league in Italy.
"But he chose to stay with Liverpool. That's what you call loyalty.
"I've known about his agreement with Liverpool and understood that he would be leaving if they were not playing in the Champions League."

David Moyes insists Wayne Rooney is not for sale
David Moyes insists there is no rift between
him and Wayne Rooney, and that Manchester United have no plans to sell
the England international.
Chelsea have submitted two unsuccessful
bids for Rooney, who missed Sunday's FA Community Shield win over Wigan
with a shoulder injury.Moyes was in a combative mood at the post-match press conference at Wembley, where he denied speculation that he had fallen out with Rooney.
"We don't want to sell Wayne," Moyes responded when it was suggested the 27-year-old wanted to leave Old Trafford for Stamford Bridge and had been told to train with United's reserve team.
"I have not fallen out with Wayne and the reason he trained with the reserves was because he wanted to because he wasn't allowed any contact."
Despite the injury, Rooney has been included in England's squad for their meeting with Scotland on Wednesday, something Moyes said he was happy about.
"I want him to join up (with the England squad)," added Moyes.
"He trained with us yesterday (Saturday). He's not ready, you'll probably see that in the game. He'll probably play a chunk of the game.
"He's had no football. He's had 45 minutes against Real Betis in a friendly when he hurt his shoulder. Apart from that, since the day he got back for pre-season, he's got no match action.
"So you probably wouldn't expect somebody in that condition to be playing for a long period."
United failed in their bid to sign Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona, but Moyes admitted that adding new players to his squad is still on his agenda.
He continued: "I hope so, we move on every day and the transfer window gets closer and closer. But if we have to start the season with what we've got then I'll be happy."
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers stands firm over Luis Suarez
Rodgers is demanding a show of contrition from the Uruguay international over what he sees as "a total disrespect" for the club's values.
Suarez is attempting to force through a move to Arsenal and claims Rodgers has reneged on a promise to sell him for £40m-plus if Liverpool failed to make this season's UEFA Champions League.
Rodgers denies making any such promise, and owner John W Henry has given an "unequivocal" assurance he will not sell to Arsenal.
That leaves an unrepentant Suarez training alone and in limbo, and despite his wish for an amicable resolution Rodgers is not about to back down either.
"There has been a lot said and a lot reported, and we have made a stance, as a club and as a manager, of the commitment and the standards required.
"If you don't have that commitment, and those standards, then you won't play. It's as simple as that.
"If we have got to sit and wait, then so be it. But this is a club that has got great values, and we hope that the situation can be resolved amicably, and I am sure it will be.
"There's no problem between me and him, it is quite calm. But obviously I have got to respect the club and the team.
"It doesn't matter who you are, if they're not pulling their weight then they are letting down the club, the city and everyone who has stood by them.
"So until I get that assurance that we are going to get nothing but 100% commitment, then there will be no solution."

ROONEY TRAINS WITH ENGLAND TEAM AHEAD OF SCOTLAND
Wayne Rooney has played only 45 minutes of pre-season football because
of hamstring and shoulder injuries, but Manchester United gave him
permission to report for duty at St George's Park.
And Rooney was out on the training pitch at 10am on Monday - half an hour before the scheduled start of the session - as preparations began in earnest for the first England-Scotland game in almost 14 years.
Roy Hodgson - who will hold a news conference at 1pm - has assured David Moyes he will not take a chance with Rooney's fitness on Wednesday night, and the United manager is expecting a rusty performance from his player.
Speaking after United's Community Shield success on Sunday, the Scot again insisted Rooney's absence was down to fitness and injury issues rather than ongoing speculation over his future.
